What Is Your Value Add?

Hello! First, let me start by saying welcome and thank you for taking the time to read—and hopefully subscribe to—my blog.
I never considered myself a writer, yet here I am, stepping out of my comfort zone. Today marks 45 years of life, and wow—what a wild and amazing ride it has been! I’m still fumbling through all that life throws at me, but I’ve also overcome and learned a lot along the way.
The funny thing about information is that we now have the ability to share it freely, yet everyone has their own perspective. News outlets claim they don’t spin things (but we all know they do), and let’s be real—who can even tell what’s true or false on the internet anymore? My goal with this blog is simple: to provide perspective and food for thought as we all work to become the best versions of ourselves.
Who Am I?
We don’t have all day, so here’s the two-second highlight reel:
I’m a woman originally from Austin, TX, now living in Huntington Beach, CA. I’ve lived all over the U.S., made some amazing friends, and picked up life lessons that (supposedly) make me well-rounded.
For over 20 years, I’ve worked in finance, holding various roles across the industry. Alongside that, I’ve had a lifelong passion for fitness and wellness. And in the last decade, I’ve discovered an even deeper passion for consulting and coaching small business owners. Let’s just say there’s always a lot going on—but I like it that way! I’m also lucky to be married to my best friend, who constantly supports and encourages me in all my endeavors.
Now, Let’s Get to the Meat of It...
Thirteen years ago, while working as a wholesaler providing financial products to advisors, one question came up in nearly every training:
“What is your value add?”
In other words, what are you contributing to a situation, a person, or an organization that makes it better?
That’s a loaded question.
Macro vs. Micro Thinking
What if you reframed your daily intentions with the mindset of adding value on both a micro and macro level?
- Micro: Focus on the daily actions and disciplines that create positive ripple effects—not just for yourself, but for those around you.
- Macro: Over time, those small, consistent efforts add up to create greater, long-term impact.
From an early age, we’re taught to be "proficient" in various skills. Then somewhere along the way, the word "expert"gets thrown around.
But here’s something I’ve learned in finance, fitness, and business:
There are no true “experts” in this world.
The idea of expertise is an illusion. The world is constantly changing. What makes someone an “expert” today might be irrelevant tomorrow. Instead, what we really admire are people who:
✔️ Learn continuously
✔️ Adapt to change
✔️ Share knowledge to help others grow
Everyone has value to add in any given situation. No one is the smartest person in the room. Intelligence and education are valuable tools, but perspective and experience are just as important.
Want to add value? Listen first. Stay humble. Speak only to what you truly know.
